South Street and the East River, 1901

I could talk about the transition from sail to steam, the last vestiges of industrial activity on the East River waterfront of lower Manhattan, the buildings on New York’s working piers, the vast mix of ship and boat types visible…but honestly, I just like this glimpse into the past. The old structures and uses on the waterfront give a sense of how shocking the Brooklyn Bridge (less than twenty years old at that moment) must have been.
