This sign is meant to be taken seriously. I’ve been near a lot of unsafe buildings: some of them were in use, some were cordoned off with police tape, some were boarded up. This sign – on the fence surrounding the Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island is the first time I’ve seen an attempt at actual explanation. The building isn’t just unsafe, it’s unstable.
