I was at the annual conference of the Association for Preservation Technology last week, and this was the first time I have visited Seattle. I had a few chances to walk around downtown and enjoyed it a great deal. Above, a notice on the facade of an abandoned 4-story garage.
The thing that jumped out at me most is the high-quality terra cotta on the older facades. Seattle’s climate, with no month where the average low temperature is below freezing, is a lot kinder to the material than New York’s. So:





It’s also an area with a high seismic risk. I particularly liked this steel-exoskeleton seismic upgrade:
