Seven years ago, I said of the SS United States “Without a use and without a lot of money, it will be gone forever. And if that happens, the world won’t end but it will be poorer for the loss.” Neither a use nor the money was found and as of September 12 this coming fall, the ship will no longer have a home, as it’s been ordered out of the berth in Philadelphia it has been in since 2011.
