I forgot to do one of these posts the last time we were recertified, in 2021. In my defense, there was a lot going on in 2021 outside of normal business. In any case, we have again been recertified as a B Corp. We were first certified in 2015, re-upped in 2017, then 2021, and now again.
I think that the idea of B Corps is much better known now than it was ten years ago – and the number of certified companies has increased from 1,200 to almost 10,000 – but for anyone not familiar: it’s a voluntary certification that is based on showing that our business has goals, and takes actions, that extend beyond the business itself. There are criteria related to how we treat our staff, our community, the environment, and our customers, as well as how our company is governed. We could do better – everyone can always do better – but our score is up quite a bit in the last two cycles, so we’re moving in the right direction.
Ultimately, the certification matters less than the issues at hand. If we were doing everything we’re doing but did not have the certification, I would not feel bad; if we squeaked by on the certification while knowingly failing at the various goals, I’d feel like a fraud.
