From a 1970s apartment house, the emergency boiler shut-down switch:

Break the plastic cover and you’re done. You don’t have to press the button, just break the plastic to allow the button, trapped in a pushed-down position by the plastic, to pop up. That opens (or closes…who knows) a circuit that somehow shuts off the boiler. And to make sure you can always break the plastic, there’s a hammer on a wire leash.
I’ve seen a lot of boiler shut-down switches that look exactly like light switches, except with red back-plates, resulting in me being quite paranoid about looking for a light switch in a boiler room. So I like this design.
