I was in the City Hall subway station yesterday, and there were a number of sparrows in there with me.


At the time it was a few degrees above freezing but the wind chill was maybe ten degrees below freezing. If you’re a little guy, like a sparrow, conserving body heat in this weather is a must. There’s not much bird food in the station – not that it stopped them from looking for some – but there was no wind and it was warmer than up top. I’d guess they were eating in City Hall Park and then ducking into the station to warm up, and repeating that cycle as necessary.
