A Hard Edge

I forget if hard edges – where a cityscape abruptly changes from one thing to another – are supposed to be good or bad, or maybe either depending on the circumstances. There are a lot of them in New York, even given the size of the city; my favorite is probably Central Park South. It’s not so different from Fifth Avenue and Central Park West, which also face Central Park, but its back doesn’t face a residential neighborhood the way the others do. Rather it faces midtown, which makes that edge even harder.
