Looking out the window on two weeks ago, during a slight thaw between two weeks of very cold weather:

The upper Hudson will mostly freeze in an ordinary winter, but upstate New York has harsh winters. Freezes are less common south of Poughkeepsie in part because of less extreme cold but also in part because the closer you get to the harbor, the more you’re in a brackish estuary rather than fresh water. I’ve seen the Hudson here in the city freeze two thirds of the way across, but not often.
