It Looked Familiar: Bad Practice

From a 1940 Batman comic, Robin battles with gangsters on a construction site:

Starting at the upper left panel and going clockwise:

  • Upper left: I guess people were building steel framing for amorphous blobs, Gehry-style, a lot earlier than we all thought. Some nice geometry there.
  • Upper right: This one looks almost okay, and I’ll give the artist some leeway. I bet Robin wished that there modern OSHA rules about fall protection.
  • Mid right: That is some cantilever. And for no reason.
  • Lower right: Again, the steel is almost okay. Judging by the green and yellow buildings, we must be 50 stories or more up.
  • Lower left: There’s that cantilever again, along with the kind of rough-housing than can lead to accidents.
  • Mid left: Two huge cantilevers. I have my doubts about the steel erection sequence.
