TERENCE CARDINAL COOKE HOSPITAL
We worked with Acheson Doyle Partners to renovate this building complex and allow it to continue to be used as a modern hospital. Located on Fifth Avenue between 105th and 106th Streets, this striking building has served the community as a medical facility for over 100 years.
Project context
The Terence Cardinal Cooke Hospital is a Beaux-Arts style, “X” plan complex designed by the architects York & Sawyer, and constructed in 1922. Although its X-shape floor plan was traditional, this design broke new ground in being a hospital without wards—only private rooms. Originally named the Flower Hospital, the hospital was renamed a few times and is now home to the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center. It spans the block between 105th and 106th Streets, facing the entrance to Central Park’s Conservatory Garden. The lower parts of the facade are of light colored limestone blocks and the upper parts consist of stucco in the same color. The building has terra cotta trim and red clay tile roofs with a central pavilion projecting above the lower roofs.
Key outcomes
We provided the client a structural feasibility review of possible locations for a new generator, rooftop HVAC equipment, future building utility equipment, lobby expansion, and a new marquee. A design was completed that included roof and floor framing modifications needed for the new rooftop generator and HVAC units; modifications to framing around the interior building lobby to accommodate a wider entry way; modifications to exterior entry stairs; modifications needed for new marquee; and modifications needed for updating the existing kitchen. These modifications are currently under construction. We are currently in the design phase for the relocation of the Harlem – PACE facility to the Terence Cardinal Cooke Annex Building and Cohen Building.
