Getting To The Good Part

I write a lot here about investigation but less about our design and construction projects. The picture above is from a recent site visit, showing the early stages of construction work at a former tuberculosis hospital in Queens that Dunn Development is converting to low-cost housing. The serious construction work has been going on for about two months and has a year to go, but we’re getting to the point where we can really see the structure of the old building. Here’s an interior view after demo:

And here’s the exterior when it was new:

It has a vaguely Miami Beach feel to it, possibly because the former standard for TB hospitals was to have as much window, balcony, and terrace area as possible. There are other, reasonably big hospital buildings to the east, but it still towers over the houses and garden apartments to the west:
