Not long ago, Marvel Comics ran a storyline where sentient plants, the Cotati, decided to kill all animal life, including, of course, people. The part page above shows the initial attack, as the Cotati more-or-less-magically grew vines over everything in their path.
The tip-off for the location of this scene is the big stone lion on the right, one of the pair at the entrance to the New York Public Library. The tower in the background on the left is also quite recognizable, with that strange multi-faceted facade on the right. You can just barely make out a low building in front of the tower, which is why the tower has that shape. The lower building is the ten-story Knox Building, constructed in 1901[efn_note]Just a little too late to be included in The Structure of Skyscrapers.[/efn_note] as the headquarters and showroom for the Knox Hat Company. As hats became less important in our society, the building was sold in the 1960s to the Republic National Bank, which grew to the point that additional space was needed by the 1980s. The tower is the expansion space constructed by the bank. The Knox Building had been landmarked in 1980, and the tower was designed to look as though it is not touching the older building, even though it is. The faceted facade is where the tower wraps around the west end of Knox.

Personally, I don’t have a problem with a new wing on an old building, and the facets feel to me like the child’s taunt of getting very close to someone’s face and saying “See? I’m not touching you!” In other words, the Cotati should remove their vines from the library and Knox and use them on the tower.
