Before it was Manhattan, it was Mannahatta – a Lenape word meaning “hilly island” – when it still had a lot of hills.

A few links to help explain:
- “Manahatta to Manhattan: Native Americans in Lower Manhattan” from the National Museum of the American Indian.
- “When Manhattan Was Mannahatta: A Stroll Through the Centuries” by Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times.
- “Welcome to New York City, 1609” a map of Mannahatta from the New York Botanical Garden.
