Explanation of the photo for the non-engineers: buldings sway at different frequencies during eathquakes. If two are touching or close enough to touch, one or both will be damaged by the force of them pounding into one another. Seismic gaps place pairs of buildings far enough apart so this won’t happen.

Explanation of the title for the non-childish: I’m not touching you.
