XKCD comics are, at this point, more or less mainstream, although they began by appealing to a geekier-than-normal audience. Randall Munroe, the artist and writer, has a background in programming, but is pretty obviously fascinated by all of the hard sciences. I’d argue, based on the content of the comics, he’s interested in the social sciences as well. In any case, despite being a long-time reader, I can’t offhand remember him directly addressing structural engineering until last week. This comic has the title “Suspension Bridge“:
All of the comics have alt text that continues the joke, and in this case the alt reads : As a first step they can put in a secondary deck, to help drivers try it out and find out how fun the jumps are. After a while no one will use the old flat deck and they can remove it.”
The title of the header-image comic is “Duty Calls.”
