Don’t Be Fooled

From sometime between 1871 and 1876, a view of the Brooklyn Theater:

I know it’s not before 1871 becuase that’s when the theater was built. I know it’s not after 1876 becuase it burned down on December 5 of that year, killing almost 300 people as the third worst fire in a place of public assembly in US history. The thing is, this is a view of the main entrance , which is in a house-sized wing. The rest of the buikdling is not visible, off to the right. The auditorium could seat 1600 people, which is a substantial theater even by modern standards: it’s more than several active Broadway theaters. We’re not seeing the big brick box that housed the lobby and the auditorium, just the little entrance vestibule.

TL;DR: Just because a picture is labeled “Building X” doesn’t mean it’s giving you an accurate idea of what Bulding X looked like.
