A Panel Tonight

I will be taking part in a panel discussion this evening organized by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Structural Engineers Association of New York. Details: here. For the link-phobic, the title is “SEAoNY and Landmarks Preservation Commission – Panelist Discussion: Saving Historic Buildings: Strategies for Remediating Structural Deterioration” and the description at the SEAoNY website is: This is a program to educate structural engineers, architects, and other interested parties on how to address historic buildings that are in structural distress, including buildings found unsafe by DOB via issuance of an Emergency Declaration. The goal is to make the process of stabilizing buildings easier and faster for applicants and DOB staff, maintain existing historic streetscape when relevant, save on demolition costs, and promote waste reduction efforts by minimizing introduction of demolition materials into the waste stream.

The Department of Buildings will be represented by two engineers, Jill Hrubecky and Ian King Oppermann, the LPC by an attorney, John Weiss, and private practice by Eytan Solomon of TYLin (the moderator) and me.

Speaking for myself, the most interesting part of the discussion should be the interaction of three different views of the same issues, all of which are simultaneously correct and which partially contradict one another.
