Supposedly I’m blogging about the built environment, and occasionally people have asked why I discuss ships at all. The short answer is that the only ordinary objects that can compete with big buildings for physical complexity are large ships. The ship in the picture has roughly the same volume of enclosed space, has about the same number of people inside, and has overall dimensions about the same as a commercial super-tall building. And yet it moves.
