That’s a steel wide-flange column (for a new building under construction) on the right, and a hollow rectangular cast-iron facade column (where it abuts the brick side wall of an 1860s loft building) on the left. Ductile versus brittle, present versus past, rolled versus cast, utilitarian versus ornamental…take your pick.
