In the last post, the frame of the Equitable building was making good progress in April of 1927. Here’s a view from April 25, looking west along Exchange Place and showing the “canyon” effect of tall buildings on lower Manhattan’s narrow streets:

Even Broad Street doesn’t look quite so broad:

By May 11, the setback at the upper floors were becoming quite clear. Note that the construction of the brick facade had begin on the Broad Street side and a bit on the Wall Street wing.

It feels like something went temporarily wrong with the construction of the north facade, given the way the scaffold is unlevel:

By May 26, the facades were coming along nicely, and the frame was getting near the top. Note that the transfer truss over the little southward projection of the Morgan building was not bricked yet.

June 9:

And by July 5, the little step-pyramid at the top of the building was taking shape:

A close up of the facade construction, off a continuous hung scaffold that allows the masons to pack in close:

Later this week: it’s a building! It has an interior!
