We’ll see how this goes in the city council. A lot of NYC buildings are too small to have much available roof area for green roofs: once you subtract a stair (and sometimes elevator) bulkhead, rooftop mechanical, and a cross-roof path for the fire department, there’s not much room left on a townhouse or tenement roof. But bigger buildings? Sure.
Up above, Rockefeller Center in 1937. I’m pretty sure the high roofs weren’t planted, but the roofs of the low wings of the International Building (the tower on the right) and the roofs of the low Maison Française and British Empire Building (in front of the RCA Building, the central tower) are all gardens. The purpose wasn’t to help the environment, it was to make the low roofs look good from the neighboring towers.
